| Deryl Winston Sr., a long-time
resident of San Diego, began playing the Hammond organ at the age
of 14 while still living in his native Seattle, Washington. Deryl
comes from a very musical family where his mother, Alice, and aunt
Jean McGraw, both served as musicians at Tolliver’s Temple
Church of God in Christ and were known in the Seattle area as very
accomplished musicians; Alice for her work on the piano and Jean
for her accomplishments on the Hammond organ. It was only natural
that, under such fine tutelage, Deryl would progress very rapidly
and soon began playing partially during church services and in time
playing for the entire service. Deryl’s father Elder John
A. Winston (deceased) was always encouraging his son despite his
father not being able to play an instrument. His father always said
to him stick with it, you will be great one day! Sure enough, his
father was right, before long congregations all over Seattle quickly
became familiar with this young man and the anointing that God had
placed over his music. To this day Deryl continues to gives his
mother along with his aunt the credit for how they were instrumental
in his life. Moreover, not to forget Deryl certainly gives “All
praises to God” for allowing him to minister through music.
In 1985, Deryl moved to San Diego where he met and later married
Ms. Brenda L. Dearing. The two have been married for over 19 years
and have two children. Deryl himself has four children in all
Keondra, Faith, Victoria and Deryl Jr. Deryl also has two grandchildren,
Kenyon and Khamyzha. After moving to San Diego Deryl never lost
a beat in providing anointed music. As his popularity grew, so
did requests for his talents. He has accompanied many of Gospel’s
greatest artists including Daryl Coley, Karen Clark-Sheard, Dr.
Vernard Johnson, Vanessa Bell Armstrong and many others, too many
to mention.
By early 2000, the Executives at Hammond Suzuki got wind of Deryl’s
talents and recruited him to be an exclusive Gospel artist for
their company. This great opportunity has afforded Deryl to travel
many places and perform with some of the worlds greatest organists,
such as Mr. Joey DeFrancessco “ Mr. Jazz Himself” and
Mr. Tony Monaco, “ B3 playa!” In addition Gospel recording
artist Minister Aaron Thomas, “ the XB-3M Master” With all this great success Deryl has had there still was something
he longed for, and that was to release his own
CD. After much encouragement from his wife Brenda, pep talks from
his friends Joey, Tony, and Bryon, fondly know as “Wookie” (Joey’s
Drummer) Also his Pastor and long time friend Supt. Gary Watkins
Sr.
Deryl set out to make his dream come to past! With help from his brother, drummer and co-producer
Donny Winston, friend and engineer Greg McKinney the project began.
In 2003,
Deryl released his first CD entitled Deryl Winston “Live
on the Hammond Organ - Can’t Nobody Do Me Like Jesus”.
Since it’s release
August 2nd the CD has received great reviews and is getting airtime
on several radio stations in the Southern California area. The
